Bolsonaro arrested after being considered a escape threat

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
