European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
