Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
